Bethany
âOh, Annabelle. If I only knew how to explain what was happening,â Bethany said, her head in her hands after supper. The ranch hands had already left. Clay hadnât joined them tonight, and Bethany didnât blame him. After heâd stormed off, she had waited for him. Sheâd hoped he would come back, if only so that she could apologize for her shortcomings; for her cowardliness in not telling him the truth before.
Tonight, sheâd learned from Ace that the coach would leave next week and everything had become so clearâthe fantasy she was living had come to an end.
âWhy donât you just start from the beginning?â Annabelle asked when Bethanyâs answer was so cryptic. Sheâd asked what was wrong and Bethany just couldnât stomach being a disappointment for a second time that night.
She took a deep breath and shook her head.
Annabelle sat next to her and took her hand.
âIâll tell you something,â she said. âWhen Ace and I met it seemed there was no way we could be together. I came here for another man that didnât work out and Ace had no money to support me. It looked like I had to go back home, but then a miracle happened and we are together now.â
âYouâre really lucky,â Bethany said.
Annabelle nodded. âLucky, yes, in many ways. But if everything happened the way it did and Ace and I hadnât told each other how we felt, we might never have gotten around to being together after all.â
Bethany frowned. âI donât understand,â she said.
Annabelle patted her hand. âCommunication is the most important thing. No matter what, talk to each other. You were open for the first time. That means something.â
Bethany nodded. It meant something, sure. It meant that sheâd lost the man she was starting to fall for even before she had him. Her heart was heavy. Her eyes stung with fresh tears and no matter how hard she tried to bite them back, they spilled over her cheeks anyway.
Annabelle dipped her head so she could look Bethany in the eye even though Bethany was looking at her hands in her lap.
âYou really care for him, donât you?â Annabelle asked.
Bethany nodded. She cared for him a lot more than she had admitted even to herself. But now that he was so angry with her, now that he would probably never talk to her again, she realized how much it hurt to lose him.
âI donât know what to do,â Bethany said. Her voice was thin. She hated being this vulnerable, this weak.
âWhat do you mean?â Annabelle asked.
Bethany swallowed, trying to get her tears to go away. Sheâd cried so much this evening she was starting to feel ridiculous. She was also exhausted.
âMy parents raised me to be honest. I already havenât done that until now. Iâve also been taught to honor my commitments. And Iâm committed to a man that I donât know in a town Iâve never been to. To be married.â
âOh. I understand.â Annabelle nodded. âI know itâs hard. But Beth, donât you see? Itâs obvious your stop here because of the accident has changed things.
